Situated within the county of Denton, the Texas city of Lewisville has a population just over 100,000 inhabitants. Lewisville City has been one of the slowest city's in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to populate, though it is amongst the oldest incorporated cities in the northern area. It was established during the year 1925 but remained a tiny town with only a few thousand people until the early 1970's.
The city of Lewisville was initially settled by Basdeal Lewis during the 1840's. He purchased the acreage and named it after himself. The oldest structure remaining at present was built in the year 1885 and is currently being utilized as the Greater Lewisville Community Theatre. In 1900, the population was around 500.
In the past, the economy was mainly comprised of businesses related to agriculture, including a feed mill, a grist mill and a cotton gin. Gradually, growth occurring west of downtown started to replace farm land as houses were constructed so as to accommodate the new settlers. There was a considerable increase in population from 1974 right after the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was built.
There are several opportunities for outdoor recreation nearby. Lewisville Lake provides ample opportunities for activities and water sports such as fishing, camping and boating.
The lake was constructing for flood control and to provide a dependable source of water for the Dallas region. Lewisville Lake is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets and beautiful nature trails and as such is rather famous during summertime. Grapevine Lake is another popular lake within the area, which consists of some nature trails perfect for biking, horseback riding and walking.
The Lewisville Fishing Barge provides a wonderful place for fishing enthusiasts, providing outdoor and indoor fishing. There are golf courses close by: Bridlewood, Lake Park Golf Course, the Tribute and Cowboys Golf Course. There are many public parks located all over Lewisville City.
The employment rate is stable and high thanks to key businesses like Med Fusion Laboratories and JP Morgan Chase. The governing party of Lewisville City is made up of six officials, one of which is the Mayor. The council members could be elected to serve terms of three years. The only situation where the Mayor vote is when there is a tie between the five Council members. Public meetings are held during the 1st and 3rd Monday of each and every month to set and discuss local legislation.
