Irving is a busy metropolis situated in the Irving-Dallas-Plano division of the Fort Worth-Arlington-Dallas metropolitan area. As of 2010, the cities population is projected to be 216,290. One of the first master-planned developments of the United States, the Las Colinas region, is located in the city. It is spread out more than 12,000 acres and was once the biggest mixed-use development in the Southwest. The Mustangs at Las Colinas, the largest horse sculpture in the globe, is located in this region. The Irving Convention Center was built in Las Colinas during January 2011. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is also within Irving city limits.
The city of Irving was established by J.O. Schulze and Otis Brown in 1902 around 50 years after the area was inhabited during the early part of 1850's. There were some other smaller communities which existed withnin the region, such as Kit Shady Grove, Sower, Finley, Union Bower, Estelle and Bear Creek, but they were all amalgamated together to form Irving during 1903. On April 14, 1914 the city of Irving was officially incorporated.
The two original founders of the city were both employed by the Rock Island, Gulf and Chicago Railway. After arriving in the area in order to survey a railroad route between Dallas and Fort Worth in 1902, they bought out the 80 acres which the British Family owned and began to build the city. On December 19, 1903 the very first town lots were bought at a public auction. During 1904, the post office from Kit was relocated to Irving.
